I had to go visit a doc a little while back. The hour and a half of waiting for a 10 minute consult was made worthwhile when I walked past this church in Turner. It is the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Not sure who the artist is as there was no plaque to be seen, but such spectacular work!! All smalti, including some gold smalti there…
**UPDATE**
The artist is Leonid Denysenko, an Australian artist of Ukrainian descent. You can read more about him here. The mosaics were made around 1987 and were installed in 1988. It’s not clear, though, from the wikipedia entry whether or not he also fabricated the mosaics or if he just designed them.
Hello. Those mosaics were installed by my uncle Ben who lives in Sydney. Contact me for more details.
All the mosaics are so beautiful. The architecture of mosaic is so good.
Hi Kim! These are very reminiscent of the late 1800’s Salviati mosaics located in a hallway at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London! Same style and indirect technique, presented as tall, monumental portraits. here’s a link to V&A descrip. http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O1137978/mosaic-titian/
Indeed they are! Beautiful!
What a charming chapel with fabulous mosaics!
Do you mind if I add your photos to mosaicatlas.com? They would go in under your name.
JOB
Hey John,
No that’s fine, but I don’t know who the artist is on these mosaics (what a shame!). I’ll have to call the church and ask. If I do find out, I’ll let you know.
Hi John,
The artist is Leonid Denysenko…
Cheers!
They’re beautiful, Kim. And so stunning with the architecture. What a treat.
