Vaulted Ceiling – David Jones, Civic

At the entrance to David Jones in Civic (fountain side) is a mosaic by renowned Australian artist Frank Hinder. It was created as part of the building in 1963 and is all made from glass and gold.

It is really very subtle, I wouldn’t have known it was there if I was not into mosaics, and blends really well with the building. This is really all I found out about this piece. Hinder certainly had an interesting life: well worth the short read!

Kim, it’s just amazing how many mosaics there are around the place that I’ve just never paid attention to! Your blog is showing me a whole other side to Canberra I never knew was there!
